Reading Room

For more than 120 years, the village hall for Alpraham and Calveley was called The Reading Room.

Calveley & Alpraham Reading Room was founded in 1892. The ‘Object’ of the original hall was as follows.

To provide the male inhabitants of Calveley, Alpraham & neighbourhood with a place where they may spend their leisure time pleasantly & intellectually, & with a suitable place for such meetings & entertainments as may be approved by the Committee.

Page 4 of the rules describes the required conduct in the hall.

Drunkenness, Gambling, or Improper Language shall not be permitted, & Members are requested to assist the Committee in enforcing this rule.

The complete set of rules is available as a PDF file for viewing and printing. This document is for interest only!

If you stood across the road from the Reading Room in 2008, the Reading Room was next to a garage/car showroom/shop. The War Memorial was located in front of the hall facing the road and can be seen behind the lamp post.

In 2018 the Reading Room finally closed and the plot was sold for building. The old hall was demolished the following year. Go to the HomePage to see our new premises!
